Chiropractic Care During Pregnancy in Fox River Grove, Illinois

If you’re new to the world of chiropractic treatment, understand that it’s about the healthy maintenance of the spinal column, discs, nervous-system and bone geometry—without the use of invasive procedures, drugs or surgery. This has many practical applications related to pregnancy and childbirth, including important procedures that can help ensure a baby’s health and even reverse potentially dangerous situations with both the mother and baby. This is why it’s important to learn about chiropractic pregnancy care.

Exploring Chiropractic Care During Pregnancy

It’s common for mothers to forget about this crucial aspect of a pregnancy. The importance begins with how several physiological / endocrinological changes occur in the body as it prepares to create an environment designed to harbor a baby. However, these very changes can also create disruptions to a mother’s spinal alignment.

  • Later stage pregnancy will create a protruded abdomen and an increased back curve. This can result in spinal misalignment.
  • The size and shape of the pelvis may change, off-setting spinal alignment and womb space for the baby.
  • Various other postural adaptations may occur.

Some of these issues, if unchecked, could lead to symptoms further down the road.

By maintaining appointments with a chiropractor who is able to determine the health of the mother’s spinal structure, it’s possible to address these issues early, as well as prevent or reduce the appearance of a number of other issues. Studies have shown chiropractic care during pregnancy helps the entire body work more efficiently, which leads to:

  • Relief of back, joint and neck pain caused by the pregnancy
  • The reduction of symptoms of nausea.
  • The reduction of labor and delivery time
  • The maintaining of a healthier pregnancy/h6>
  • Reduced chances of requiring a cesarean delivery (more on this next)

Misaligned Pelvic Complications

As a mother’s pelvis changes, this can create issues for not only the mother but the baby, as well. The worst case scenario is a condition known as intrauterine constraint when the pelvis becomes misaligned, reducing the amount of space for the developing baby in the womb. As a result of the restriction, the baby may be unable to get into the best position for delivery. These are instances when the doctor will recommend a C-section. Approximately 4% of all unborn babies incur a breech presentation in the womb.

Expert chiropractic care, however, can reduce these chances by providing balance in a pregnant woman’s pelvis and reducing excess stress to her uterus and its supporting ligaments. Together, these efforts are clinically shown to promote ideal fetal positioning—thus preventing a future invasive C-section delivery. This procedure of promoting a balanced pelvis leading to fetal repositioning is known as the Webster Technique, named after the late Larry Webster, D.C. who founded the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association (ICPA), and established this specific style of chiropractic adjustment and analysis.

In the July / August 2002 issue of the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics it was reported how there is an 82% success rate of babies being successfully repositioned (turning vertex) when the Webster Technique is performed by a chiropractor. The journal goes on to suggest that this technique could be performed as early as the 8th month of pregnancy when a breech presentation is first apparent.

However, the fear caused by a breech presentation can be avoided completely through further preliminary strategies; namely routine visits to your chiropractor. As your chiropractor helps to ensure an optimal, balanced pelvis: the chances of a baby entering a bad position in the womb is greatly diminished. By ensuring correct positioning mothers are able to not only avoid a dangerous C-section but also avoid dystocia (difficult labor). This ensures the best and safest possible outcome for the mother and child.

No. All chiropractors are specially trained to work with women who are pregnant. Ensuring the wellness of a woman’s pregnancy is routine for most chiropractors. In addition, some chiropractors take a special interest in prenatal and postnatal care, focusing on everything from fertility procedures to the previously mentioned Webster Technique to correct poor fetal positioning. They can be recognized through the following certifications:

  • DACCP – A diplomate with the ICPA that reflects the highest level of advanced training in pre-natal and post-natal care.
  • CACCP – Certified with the ICPA reflecting an advanced level of training
  • Member of ICPA – Reflects a special interest in this area of chiropractic medicine.
  • Webster Certified – Reflects that your chiropractor is specially certified to perform this particular chiropractic adjustment for fetal repositioning (as described earlier).
ICPA certified chiropractors can provide many great beneficial services for new mothers, including exercises and stretches designed to optimize the health of the pregnancy. We recommend for all expectant mothers to explore this area.
